Vesda - Connecting, Programming, Diagnosing Successfully.


Vesda High Level Interface (HLI)

Vesda aspirating smoke detectors are commonly used in a multitude of environments and offer significant benefits over conventional point type smoke detectors. Historical event logging and programmable sensitivity are two enhanced features that Vesda detectors provide.


Initial commissioning and routine servicing of Vesda detectors allow the smoke sensitivity to be programmed, analysed and adjusted if required. The historical event log provides essential information on background smoke levels to allow accurate manual adjustment of the alarm levels.


Over time, the filters inside a Vesda detector require replacing due to contamination. When a filter is changed, the Vesda filter monitoring parameters require resetting.


To access the additional features of a Vesda detector, some form of programming access is required either at commissioning stage or on subsequent service visits.


VesdaNET enabled detectors are configured through an optional onboard programmer, a hand-held programmer or a laptop via the High-Level Interface (HLI).


Stand-alone Vesda detectors can be programmed through a direct serial connection via a PC.


The latest range of Vesda-E detectors are generally programmed via a USB cable and laptop computer.


For any of the PC programming methods used, the Vesda System Configuration (VSC) software is required. Most Vesda system suppliers should be able to provide this software and some, like Ventec Systems, ensure that it is included free of charge with the appropriate hardware.


The HLI and direct serial connection methods also require an RS232 serial port on the users' laptop.


Most modern laptops no longer provide an RS232 serial port, and a USB to RS232 adapter is required to successfully connect the programming hardware to the computer running the VSC software.


Only specific USB to RS232 converters will work successfully with the VSC software. If an attempt is made to connect to a Vesda detector without a compatible USB adapter, the user will receive a message similar to "A connection could not be established" or the software will appear to connect and will then disconnect within a few seconds.


Most suppliers of Vesda detection should be able to supply a compatible USB to RS232 adapter or provide information on which ones work correctly. Some, including Ventec Systems, ensure that the correct adapter is included when purchasing the respective connection hardware.

Once the correct connection equipment is available, connecting to a Vesda detector is relatively straight forward. The following list identifies the connection equipment and VSC connection type for various Vesda models.


Vesda LaserFOCUS - models VLF-250 & VLF-500

Use a direct serial connection via laptop and connect using the VesdaTALK protocol.


Vesda LaserCOMPACT - model VLC-500 (Relay Only)

Use a direct serial connection via laptop and connect using the VesdaLINK protocol.


Vesda LaserCOMPACT - model VLC-505 (VesdaNET)

Use a hand held programmer or High Level Interface (HLI) and connect using the VesdaNET protocol.


Vesda LaserPLUS - models VLP-400, VLP-002 & VLP-012

Use a hand held programmer (or on board on VLP-012) or High Level Interface (HLI) and connect using the VesdaNET protocol.


Vesda LaserSCANNER - models VLS-204, VLS-214, VLS-304, VLS-314, VLS-600 & VLS-700

Use a hand held programmer (or on board on VLS-214 & VLS-314) or High Level Interface (HLI) and connect using the VesdaNET protocol.
